'Horse' album due for CD release
April 2007

We hear a lot of sad stories here at Coathanger. Tales of treasured Ross Ryan LPs and tapes that have vanished over the years. Sometimes they're lost during a household/life change; or handed over as part of a divorce settlement. One guy had all his RR recordings stolen - but not the Frank Zappa albums (we won't even go there).

Sometimes they're just plain worn out.

Thus, a great deal of excitement amongst Ryanatics worldwide was generated by the announcement last year of a licensing agreement between Coathanger and EMI .
(See: Historic agreement)

The first fruits of all this will be the June release of the 'My Name Means Horse' album through Aztec Music . Over the years, Aztec has earned a high-cred reputation for its quality re issues of many classic Australian albums and Coathanger is more than pleased to have Ross's classic in their lineup.

Unavailable in any format since the late 70s, the Horse CD arrives, ironically, thirty three and a third years after it's original release. It's almost like some lost Blues recording.

'Applause' masters missing
March 2007

There is a fully qualified, don't even think about it it's gone, lost Ross Ryan album.

1n 1974, as a projected follow up to 'My Name Means Horse', EMI producer Peter Dawkins recorded a number of Ross's freeform but apparently entertaining Melbourne campus gigs. The idea was to release a live album to show the general public - whilst they were still paying attention - the other side of this bearded, intense, seemingly depressed, singer-songwriter Ross Ryan guy. Let's call it the frustrated stand-up comedian side.

With this balance, it was believed that the act would then make more sense.

But alas, before anyone even had a chance to listen to the tapes, Peter's assistant accidentally mislabeled them and they were reused to record a phenomenally successful '1001 Strings' album. A success that Ross has always rightly felt belonged to him. "Hey, they were my tapes man!"

Thus there was a sense of déjà vu when we were recently informed by EMI that they were unable to locate the second side of 'After The Applause' (the bearded, intense follow up to the 'Horse' album).

Having just glanced at the list of tracks in question, we fully appreciate that this isn't exactly the burning of the library at Alexandria; but it's still unfortunate. Sadly, the B-side to the 'Blue Chevrolet Ballerina' single, 'Send Me The Pillow You Dream On (I Want To Start A Coalmine)' is also missing - to many, a much greater loss.

Whether this will hinder the planned release of Ross's difficult third compilation, is at this stage, unclear. However we have been assured by EMI that the search continues.
