My father told the story of the the Holden Brothers' Circus around the dinner table back in the 60¹s and 70¹s growing up in Adelaide .... Adolhpus, the one legged triple parallel bar artist and William, Dad¹s Grandad, playing piano and tap dancing at 90 years old .... they sounded like tall tales - too wild to be true. Researching the history of the Holdens naturally led me to the Ashtons, which led me to "The Travelling Showman" by Tex Morton. I wanted to hear more Tex and was then introduced to The Regal Zonophone Collection. This is the material drawn on for this session. It was recorded by Tex when he was a young man in the prime of his energy and talent. Music is a genetic part of the Holden family tradition. I have found family members throughout the tree with deep connections to music. One of the joys of being home has been to share that, so for the past couple of years I have been meeting every Tuesday night with Mick Holden, his daughter Dallas and our friend Roger Treble to play, write and sing together. We felt "The Travelling Showman" was a natural homage to Mick's great grandad, Adolphus Holden, the founder of the circus. It was recorded in a leisurely fashion at Roger’s house in 1998. Meanwhile, I was learning new Tex songs and introducing them at our Tuesday night sessions. Then it hit me that The Holdens should record a tribute to Tex Morton and do it the way he did it - Live!
